Greater awareness is warranted for the intensifying threats to regional stability in the Western Balkans; especially amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. With recent calls for secession and shifting alliances, local ethno-nationalist groups are bolstering their demands that serve their own interests. Meanwhile, these groups are receiving increasing influence and support from foreign players that are led by their own agendas. It is important to note that tensions of the 1991-2001 Yugoslav Wars are still very current. Therefore, a potential escalation of events is a factor that should be taken into account by travelers and security managers posted within the region.
